“SQUIRREL SENSE”
Have you ever seen a squirrel
With a nut in the Fall
Gathering a harvest
For the long Winter haul
He runs along the grass
With the nut in his mouth
As he hurries home
To his hidden storehouse
It seems he never tires
He even takes time to play
Up this tree down that tree
As he scampers away
He never seems worried
That God will provide
And before you know it
Has another nut to hide
Why sometimes that squirrel
Seems smarter than me
He’s trusting God
For all of his needs
You know that squirrel isn’t lazy
And he moves fast you see
Because Winter is coming
As he moves tree to tree
Little by little
He’s searching the ground
And the fellows quite funny
If a pile he’s found
He gets all excited
Packs one in each cheek
Holds one in his hands
And walks on his hind feet
Sometimes I’ve wondered
As he moves about
He never seems anxious
What’s he think about
When he folds his hands
Is he stopping to pray
Thanking God for the nuts
That he’s found today
These thoughts may seem foolish
But they make sense to me
Because squirrels seem so joyful
As they romp playfully
Have you ever seen a squirrel
Depressed or with a frown
Have you ever seen a tear
On his little cheek run down
Have you ever seen a squirrel
Lying prostrate on the ground
With so much liquor in him
That he could not move around
Have you ever seen a squirrel
Go to a doctor every week
Checking on his ulcers
Or if his pulse was weak
I haven’t seen it either
So maybe you and I
Reflecting on the squirrel
Can learn something bye and bye
If we take time to be creative
Diligently do our work each day
Thank God for His blessings
Like nuts he’s brought our way
Refusing to be anxious
But trusting God each day
We’ll probably find our ulcers
Will quickly go away
And checking our blood pressure
Every day or two
Is something we will find
We do not have to do
So when you see a squirrel
Think on what I’ve said
Or the squirrel might live on longer
After you are dead
